Position title: Program Assistant/Volunteer Coordinator           
 
Reporting to: Executive Director
 
Overall Summary:
 
Growing Chefs! is looking for an individual passionate about food sustainability and working with children who can help our corps of volunteers successfully deliver our Classroom Gardening and Cooking Program.
 
Growing Chefs! teaches children about growing and cooking food by putting chef and community volunteers into elementary schools. Our mission is to teach kids and families about healthy food and healthy food systems through direct hands-on experience.
 
In this key support role, the successful candidate will work with the Executive Director to manage and support volunteers and be responsible for administrative, communications, and fundraising roles in Growing Chefs! It will offer the successful candidate an inside view of the workings of a registered charity and experience applicable to both the for-profit and non-profit sectors.
 
This position is full-time at 35 hours/week—may occasionally include evenings and weekends. The anticipated start date is June 30th, 2014. This is a paid position based in Vancouver, B.C.
 
 
Responsibilities:
 
Program Coordination

  • Recruit, train, and coordinate classroom volunteers and teachers.
  • Coordinate and oversee program operations and program administration.

 
Fundraising

  • Assist with administrative support, coordination, marketing and promotion of Growing Chefs! fundraising campaigns, annual events, and donor stewardship.
  • Write and design all fundraising campaign and promotional materials.
  • Research and submit grant proposals and reports; manage grant tracking and reporting.

 
Administration

  • Assist with day to day operations, including bookkeeping, reporting, scheduling, filing, and data entry related to volunteers and donors, board and committee meetings, and general administration.

 
Communications

  • Generate content and update social media sites, online postings, blog, newsletter, and website.
  • Help with the writing, design, and proofreading of printed promotional materials.

 
Community Outreach

  • Participate in and coordinate Growing Chefs! community outreach events.

 
The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A passion for supporting local and urban agriculture.
  • Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to work to strict deadlines.
  • Strong communication, writing and proofreading skills.
  • Experience working with children and youth in an educational environment.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Experience working with and managing a volunteer base and an understanding of volunteer relations.
  • Experience with event coordination and planning.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Salesforce, and MailChimp.
  • Fluency with social media platforms.
  • Driver’s License.

 
Additional skills an asset:

  • Administrative experience working with a registered charity or non-profit organization.
  • Experience in community outreach and community events.
  • An understanding of data management and basic bookkeeping.
  • An understanding of online and offline marketing and promotions.
  • Basic knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, and Drupal.
  • An understanding of donor relations and experience with grant writing and reporting.
